AWS: Connect To Windows Instance Using RDP

In this post we are going to connect to a Windows instance using RDP.  In order for us to connect to the Windows instance we need to get the password for the server using the key pair that we downloaded from the last post when we created the instance, the .pem file.

Here are the steps to connect to the Windows instance using RDP:

1.  Navigate the EC2 "Instances" page, check the instance and click "Connect"

2. On the next screen click on "Get Password"

3.  On the next screen select the .pem file that you've downloaded by clicking on the "Choose File" button. Then click on the "Decrypt Password" button. You will be taken back to the previous screen.
4. Click on the "Download Remote Desktop File" to download the .rdp file, then copy the password into the clipboard.

5. Double click on the .rdp file and paste the password, check the "Don't ask me again..." checkbox, then click "Connect"

6. Paste in the password when prompted for the password, then click "OK"

7. Check "Don't ask me again..." and click "Yes" to accept the certificate.

8. You will be connected to your windows instance.  You can change your password if you want to.  AWS is Linux centric, so you'll probably not use Windows on AWS.  I recommend you go with Azure if you are a Windows shop.  But, I just wanted to show you that it's possible.

Make sure you don't show or share your .pem key pair file with anybody that's not supposed to have access.  I would suggest that you delete the key pair file and create an new one, if you were showing people how to log in a blog post or something.  Just saying.
