In this post we going to get our development environment with NodeJS, VSCode and Postman
The Urls are the following, if you are developing in Linux you should install the Linux version. All these tools are cross platform so you can develop in either Windows, Linux or MacOS:
.NET Core: https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download
Node.JS: https://nodejs.org/en/
Visual Studio Code: https://code.visualstudio.com/#alt-downloads
Postman: https://www.postman.com/downloads/
For .NET Core make sure you download the "recommended" version and not the preview version. Also with NodeJS, usually it has LTS status.
Installing .NET Core SDK and NodeJS On Fedora
In order to install .NET Core SDK on Fedora open the terminal and type in the following
sudo dnf install dotnet-sdk-3.1 -y
The -y tells Fedora to skip the y/N prompt and just go on with the install
Once the SDK is installed you can verify the install with the command dotnet --version
For NodeJS you type in a similar command
sudo dnf install nodejs -y similarly you can verify the install by typing
node --version and
npm --version repectively
Installing Visual Studio Code On Fedora
For Visual Studio Code it's actually better to add the repository hosted by Microsoft and install it through the terminal because that insures that you get the latest version. Here are the steps, first type in the following command
sudo rpm --import https://packages.microsoft.com/keys/microsoft.asc
Then type
sudo sh -c 'echo -e "[code]\nname=Visual Studio Code\nbaseurl=https://packages.microsoft.com/yumrepos/vscode\nenabled=1\ngpgcheck=1\ngpgkey=https://packages.microsoft.com/keys/microsoft.asc" > /etc/yum.repos.d/vscode.repo'
Or you can type sudo su then leave out the sudo part of the command
After you run the command to add the Microsoft repository type the command dnf check-update to get the latest updates then type dnf install code -y to then type exit to get out of being a super user and type code . to launch the IDE to verify your install, you should see Visual Studio Code being launch
When you decide on the folder you want to create your application in you need to change the permission for the folder in order for it to work in Linux, else you can't create any new files.
I created a folder in the /opt/app/ path to hold all my applications. So I need to run the command sudo chown -R $(whoami) /opt/app/ to give the current user, permission to create files.
Installing Postman On Fedora
To install Postman on Fedora, the easiest way is to install snapd package manager first then you can just use the snap command to install it
Here are the steps:
1. First let's install the command sudo dnf install snapd -y
2. Now you can install Postman by typing snap install postman
3. Now you can just type postman on the terminal to launch Postman, once you are signed in you can start using it
